Yesterday was a tougher day than most. We gathered to say goodbye to a wonderful friend and to support his family, friends, colleagues and adversaries. Yes, there are people on this planet who just couldn’t figure out the specialness of the man. They figured there had to be an angle. There were angles but they were always attached to wood working, construction, degree of incline or some such thing.
One of the songs chosen today was ‘Time in A Bottle’ by Jim Croce. It is representative of the positive impact that Lance had on our lives. Each of us has a box in which we will forever keep our memories of Lance. Occasionally, we will bring the memories into the light, cry a little, laugh a lot or think the quick retort we should have had but whatever the outcome we are so fortunate to share our lives with both Lance and Karen.
Lance, David, Earl, Ben and Sage spoke today. Their memories aren’t so different from the memories the rest of us share. They were closer to him than most people but each of us, who knew Lance, have a special memory that we can share just as they found the courage to do today.
So long, my friend. You will be missed as much as you were treasured.
The nugget today is “seize life with both hands and live it on your own terms.” Lance certainly did. We can honour him by following his example although developing his razor sharp wit will take many a life time and a significant amount of liability insurance.
